Pizza slice tarot card on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A pizza slice with melting cheese drips and pepperoni sits at the centre of a tarot-style card with Roman numeral VII and the number 7 in the top corners. Two more pizza slices appear at the bottom, and the wording LA FETTA is set in a banner at the base. The work uses bold outlines, fine hatching and grey shading on a light skin tone, with radiating rays and smoke-like swirls behind the slice.

Tomasz had read cards on the harbour wall for eleven summers and had never once drawn a pizza. So when the seventh card slid from the pack under a gull's shadow, he expected the Chariot, and instead found a single slice standing upright over a bed of smoke, rays fanning out behind it as if the sun had been told to make a fuss. The fishermen on the quay went quiet. Somebody had ordered from the van up by the lifeboat house, and the smell was already drifting down the slipway.

'What's it mean, then?' asked Bea from the chandlery, leaning over the rail with a mug going cold in her hand.
'Victory,' said Tomasz, because the sevens were always victory. 'Over the afternoon, most likely. Look at the cheese. Everything good comes with a drip, and you've got to be quick to catch it before it runs down your wrist.'
He would have said more, but the bottom of the card had two more slices lying on their plates, pepperoni glistening, and the banner underneath read LA FETTA in capitals that seemed to be shouting. Bea turned the card over. On the back, in her own handwriting from a Tuesday long gone, someone had written: van shuts at four.
It was ten to. They ran. The van's hatch was already lowering when Tomasz slid a coin under it, and the woman inside handed him the last slice wrapped in paper that was going translucent with grease. He ate it standing on the cobbles while the afternoon sun bounced off the water. The cheese dripped onto his wrist, exactly as the card had promised, and he caught it with his tongue and decided the cards had been right all along.
