Pizza slice with flower and Turtle Power lettering

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A pizza slice with red pepperoni, a yellow cheese edge and a brown crust sits at the centre, with a pink and green flower with leaves on top. The words Turtle Power are set in block capitals below the slice. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour are typical of a traditional style, and the design is framed against a dark background with another tattoo partly visible at the top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Oyelaran had kept the slice counter under the Hackney Road arches for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had asked her why the pizzas on her board came with a flower on top. The regulars assumed it was decoration, like parsley on a dead man's plate. At two in the morning, when the last bus had gone and the shutter rattled in the wind off the canal, she would press a red petal into the tomato with her thumb and say nothing about it.

On the night in question a boy came down the steps from the railway bridge with a cardboard tube under his arm and a face like he had swallowed a sparrow. He wanted a slice. He wanted, he said, the one with the pepperoni that looked angry. She gave him the one that looked tired, which was the same slice on a different day, and told him to sit.

He was not hungry, it turned out. He was being chased by a man in a grey coat who believed the boy had taken a tortoise from a pet shop on Kingsland Road. The boy had not taken a tortoise. He had taken a small green turtle the size of a biscuit, which had lived at the bottom of a fish tank behind the counter for nine years, and it was now inside his jumper, snoring.

Mrs Oyelaran lifted the slice onto the flat of her palm and walked to the back door, where the grey coat was already rattling the lock. She opened it wide and the cold came in. "Turtle power," she said, the way her father used to say it when he wanted a door held shut. The petal on the pizza curled at the edge, and the man in the grey coat looked down at the warm slice being offered to him, took it without thinking, and went home to his wife.
