A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frangipani came up through the cracks in the slipway the spring after the boats stopped coming in, and nobody on Carrick Head could say who had planted it. Old Mairi Gunn said it was the sea's doing, a gift for the widow Tennant who had walked the quay every evening since her husband's trawler went down past the light. Her daughter Ellen said it was nonsense and cut a branch to root in a jam jar on the windowsill, where it stayed green through the winter and did nothing at all.

In May the jar was full of flowers. Five petals each, pale cream at the edge and gold at the throat, and a scent so thick the lodger complained of it at breakfast. Ellen carried the jar down to the harbour wall and tipped the blossoms into the tide one by one, the way her mother had taught her to do for the drowned, and watched them turn slowly on the swell towards the open water.

The next morning there was a boat tied at the bottom of the steps. It was not the Tennant boat. It was small and grey and very old, and its name was painted out in careful white letters. Someone had left a single coil of rope on the thwart and a tin of tobacco, and the rope had been knotted into a shape like a flower with a great many petals.

Ellen never learned whose hands had tied it. She kept the boat, though, and every spring she rowed out past the light and let one blossom fall from her palm. Mairi said that was foolishness. Ellen said the sea seemed to like the company.
