Butterfly and lotus flower design sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a large butterfly with a second, fainter butterfly behind it, surrounded by several lotus flowers in bud and open form. Thin swirling vines and tendrils connect the flowers across the sheet. The linework is soft and sketchy, with graded pencil shading on the petals and wing edges, and the composition fills the page in a loose cluster.

Nebet had been told twice that the scribe's sketches were not for sale, and twice she had come back to the pond wall at dawn to watch him work. He drew in grey lead on the limewash, never ink, so that the lines could be wiped away by the next flood if the priests did not like them. Today he was fighting a butterfly. It kept settling on the buds he had drawn, and each time he lifted his stylus it lifted too, leaving a second shadow hanging behind the first like a breath on cold water.

"It is the same butterfly," he said, not looking at her. "It is only that one of them has not decided where it lives."
She crouched beside the basket of cut stems. The lotuses here closed at dusk and opened again at dawn, and the ones he had drawn were still shut in tight cones, their petals furred with shade. Along the edges ran the vines he liked, curling back on themselves in loops that never quite ended. He had shown her how the lines thinned where the light was strongest, pressing hard at the base of each petal and letting the point drift off into nothing.
On the last morning before the harvest barges came, the second butterfly was gone. Nebet found the wall bare of it, only a faint smudge where his thumb had rubbed the lead. The scribe sat in the reeds with his palette in his lap, watching the water open the buds one by one. "Some things are only ever drawn once," he said, and handed her the stylus.
