Pocket watch and chain on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large pocket watch with Roman numerals and a visible hand sits at the centre of the design, with a loose chain wrapping below it and a fob-like shape on the left. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with soft highlights on the metal casing and deep shadows along the chain links. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and fills the upper arm and shoulder area.

The lift on the fourteenth floor had been dead since March, so Dev climbed the stairs with the tin under his arm and the watch knocking against its lid. Nobody had claimed it from lost property in four months. The label read Pryce, flat 41, in biro gone grey with damp, and the watch inside was heavier than it looked, its silver case worn soft at the edges where a thumb had rubbed it for decades.

On the landing he opened the tin. The face had Roman numerals, thin as eyelashes, and the hour hand sat stubbornly just past the four while the minute hand had given up somewhere near the two. The chain was still knotted to the fob, a little brass key dangling from the end. He turned the crown between finger and thumb and felt the mainspring catch, then the small quick tick, as if the thing had been waiting for someone to ask it to keep going. Below him a cable hummed, though no lift moved.

Flat 41 was at the end of the walkway, its door painted a green that had blistered in the sun. A woman in a dressing gown answered before he knocked twice. She looked at the watch, then at his face. "Dad always set it by the shipping forecast," she said. "He's been gone since the spring. You can keep time for him if you like."

Dev shook his head and pressed the watch into her palm, the chain pooling after it like water. Behind him the door shut. For the first time in months the stairwell was full of a sound that was not the wind, a small steady ticking, going down with him one floor at a time.
