Pocket watch with roman numerals on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed pocket watch with roman numerals and an ornate engraved case fills most of the frame, with its open face showing visible gears and hands. The shading is smooth and highly contrasted, with fine stippled detail on the case and dark outlines. A partly visible rose in soft grey shading sits above the watch on the same arm.

The hall smells of floor polish and the same orange squash it smelled of in 1998, and you are standing by the trestle table with a paper cup going soft in your hand while Denise Hobbs explains that the clock above the stage has always run three minutes slow. Nobody has ever fixed it. Somebody always mentions it.

You take out your grandfather's pocket watch, the one with the leaf-engraved case that rode in his waistcoat through two wars and forty years of Tuesday pub quizzes. It has been stopped at a quarter to four since the funeral. You meant to take it to a man on Carrow Road. You never did, and you have carried it anyway, the way you carry most things you cannot quite put down.
Ruth Partridge, who once sat behind you in Maths and copied your long division, taps your elbow and asks what time you have. You flip the case open. The hands sit still against their Roman numerals, but behind them the little brass wheels are turning, slow and patient, as if nobody ever told them they were supposed to have stopped.
"Still going," you say. "Just not telling anyone." She laughs, the hall clock ticks on three minutes behind, and you close the case without correcting it.
