Pocket watch and key in black and grey realism
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic pocket watch with Roman numerals and hands sits at the centre of the design, with an ornate key below it and a cross-like shape at the lower edge. Soft smoky wisps and deep black shadows run across the skin, and fine shading gives the watch face and case a convincing metallic depth. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey, framed by the curve of the arm against a white background.

The watchmaker's widow would not let the clock in the square be wound, not after the autumn the forest came down the hill in smoke. Her son Tobias had gone up past the last stile with his father's silver pocket watch in his waistcoat and the iron key that fitted nothing in the village, and he had not come back down.

The villagers said the wood kept time of its own. Those who walked in at dusk found their shadows longer than the trees, and when they came out again the church bell had rung a day or a year. Each evening the widow went to the edge of the bracken and held the watch open in her palm, waiting for the hands to move the way they had when her husband was alive.
One night the hands turned. She heard the key drop against the stones at the stile, and at the foot of the gate lay a grey coil of smoke that smelled of cold oil and cut pine. She picked up the key and the watch and went down to the square, and she wound the clock herself, twelve strokes, then stood until the last one stopped ringing.
Tobias came down the hill the next morning with white hair and a boy's grin, carrying nothing at all. He said the wood had taken only the hours it was owed, and that the key would now open the gate from either side.
