Pocket watch and rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed pocket watch with Roman numerals and an engraved, scrolled case sits above a fully opened rose. The watch face and petals are rendered with smooth shading, highlights and soft shadows that give them depth. The tattoo is entirely in black and grey ink and fills the frame against a dark background.

Mr Haddow would not let you wind the watch until the rain had cleared off the slate roofs of Carrick Bridge, so for three days it sat on the jeweller's counter like a held breath, its hands fixed at the hour your father died. You kept turning it over in your palm. The case was engraved with curling leaves that caught the lamplight, and the Roman numerals looked stern enough to grade you.

On the Thursday the sun came through over the station yard and Haddow lifted the back with his tweezers. Inside, the balance wheel had rusted in a small orange bloom. He said it would take a week and cost more than the tin under your bed held. You said you would pay in instalments, and he looked at you the way the stationmaster looked at the late train when nobody got off it, and agreed.
Walking back along Mill Row you bought a single red rose from Nessie at the flower stall, though its petals had already browned at the edges. You held it while the bells of St Olave's started striking noon and counted them under your breath. By the fourth stroke you had decided the flower was for your mother, who had never once in her life been given one.
When you finally collected the watch in October it ticked against your ear like a second heartbeat, and Haddow had polished the case until the scrollwork shone. You pocketed it, walked out to the bridge, and set the hands to the hour the last train left without you. Then you let the minutes run on ahead of you, for once.
