Pocket watch and rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows an open gold pocket watch with Roman numerals and hands at about ten past ten, hanging above a red rose with curled petals. The watch and rose are rendered with fine shading and highlights for a realistic, three-dimensional effect, over a loose orange and amber watercolour background. The image shows the same design twice, side by side, centred on the forearm.

Tamsin had wound the watch every morning since her grandfather's funeral, because he had always said a harbour clock that ran down left the boats without a reckoning. On the night the Mary Ellen failed to come home, the hands stuck at ten minutes past ten and would not shift. She carried it down the slipway wrapped in an old net-cloth so the chain would not catch.

The rosebush grew against the chandler's wall at the top of the quay, and nobody had pruned it since the war. Its red flowers opened only at dusk, and the fishwives said they opened for whoever was still out on the water. Tamsin knelt in the wet gravel and set the watch face-up against the roots, where its shadow fell across the petals.

Nothing happened for the better part of an hour. Then one petal lifted and curled back, and the second hand gave a small jolt, like a boot knocking free of mud. Past the breakwater a lantern swung, steadied, and came in slowly, low in the water, the mast leaning to one side.

Her father came up the steps last of the crew, soaked to the bone and grinning, and took the watch from her hand. "You kept it going," he said. He wound it once more, and the rose folded shut against the wall, and Tamsin understood that it had only ever been waiting for him to come home.
