Pocket watch with heart bow and chain
Black and grey · Flash
A pocket watch hangs from a long link chain, with a heart-shaped bow at the top and Arabic numerals around a dial marked FOREVER. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft grey shading on the case, the hands and the cast shadow on the left. The composition is black and grey on a pale background, with the watch tilted at an angle.

The lock gates groaned shut behind the Patience, and you knelt on the wet gunwale to fish the watch out of the water where it had slipped from its chain. Your uncle's watch. Brass gone the colour of weak tea, the heart-shaped bow still bright where his thumb had rubbed it for forty years. Nine minutes past eleven, it said, though the sun was clearly going down over the poplars.

Uncle Ferris had always said the watch kept the time of the river, not the town. Every lock on the Oxford cut ran a little differently, he claimed, and a man who wound it each morning at the first gate would never be late for anything. You tried it anyway. You wound the crown until it stiffened and hung the chain from the tiller hook, and the boat, which had been pulling against its ropes all afternoon, went still.
The keeper's wife came down the towpath with a kettle and a face like a closed door. 'That's been stopped since the flood,' she said. 'You'll not start it by sulking at it.' You told her it was running fine. She looked at the dial, at FOREVER curling across the middle of it in careful capitals, and laughed the way people laugh at funerals. 'Look at the hands, love.'
The hands had both swung round to the bottom of the face, where the seven and the six and the five crowded together like barges at a queue. Behind you the lock filled with a long sigh of water, and the Patience rose, slow and steady, past the mark where the stone should have stopped it. You kept the watch in your fist all the way to the top gate, because a thing that promised forever ought to be made to keep its word.
