Mind the step, the lot of you, the ground is soft where the big top stood and the mud has eaten more than one good boot. Sit close. The fire's low but my voice carries to the back of the waltzers, and I have a tale about a watchmaker's girl called Ada Pell who ran away with the Michaelmas Fair in the year the church bells stopped.

She came to us with a pocket watch in her apron and no more than a shilling to her name. The watch had belonged to her father, who mended clocks in Stroud for forty years and never once came late to his own supper. Every night she wound it, and every night she held the open case up to the lamp so the wheels could catch the light. The Roman numerals were worn to ghosts, but she knew them by heart. She told the ringmaster that time is only gears agreeing with each other, and if one tooth slips, the whole county runs late.

The fair made her its timekeeper. She wore the bead chain looped round her wrist to keep the watch from the pickpockets, and the acanthus leaves carved along the old carousel were so thick she could find her way by them in the dark. Each evening at nine she stopped the music and called the hour, and the dancers came out of the tents as if somebody had rung for them.

Then the autumn frost came early and the watch stopped at ten past four, and not one soul on the ground could say why. Ada sat on the caravan step with the case open on her knee, turning the little hands by fingernail. Near dawn a gear clicked, though nobody had touched it. She swore after that the watch only ever ran when someone was waiting for it.
