Pocket watch with roses and script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a pocket watch with Roman numerals on its face, set among rose blooms and leaves. The words Time flies are written across the lower half in flowing script. The linework is sketchy with light shading on the watch case and petals, and the image is entirely in graphite greys on paper.

Nobody on the ward argued. Most of them were too tired, and the ones who weren't were dying, and dying people rarely care what the clock says.

The old man in bed four had no visitors and a pocket watch he would not give up. Its silver lid had roses worked into the metal, and a crack ran across the glass like a dry riverbed. Every hour he asked the time, and every hour she told him, and every hour he shook his head as if she had got it wrong on purpose.
Near four one morning he held the watch out to her, his hand shaking. 'Wind it back eleven minutes,' he said. 'Then the morning will have to wait for me.' She told him the clock on the wall would disagree. He said the wall clock had never once been on his side. So she turned the little crown until the hands crept backwards, and the watch began its small ticking against his palm.
By the time the day staff came on, the wall clock had gone on without them, and the old man was asleep with the watch on his chest, still ticking, still eleven minutes behind everything else in the building. The night sister left it there. Her grandmother would have called that kindness, though she would also have said kindness and being right were different things.
