Pocket watch with watercolour splashes
Mixed · Flash
A drawn pocket watch with an ornate loop at the top sits at the centre of the image, with its face, numerals and hands rendered in fine grey pencil or ink linework. Loose watercolour washes in red, orange and purple bleed behind and across the watch, with drips running down the left side. The design is set on a plain white background with no skin or body part visible.

The watch stopped at the top of the Kessel Pass, a little after four, just as the wind came round off the ridge and began to throw grit into your eyes. You had carried it up from the valley in your inside pocket, the silver case worn soft at the loop by your father's thumb, and you had wound it every dawn for eleven days the way he showed you: three turns, no more, never in the cold. Ilse, the guide, had laughed when you first took it out at the hut. The pass keeps its own time, she said, and watches are for people who still believe in valleys.

You do not stop to argue with the hands. You crouch in the lee of a cairn and cup the case against your chest, and under the grey hiss of the wind you hear her again, calm as a closing door. Don't shake it, she had said. Warm it. Time runs slower where it is needed.
So you wait. The sky above the col bruises from grey to a wet violet, and the last light spills down the slopes in slow red washes that drip into the scree below. When the hour hand finally shivers, it is not the hour you expected. It has slipped back, like a tide going out, to the afternoon your father stood in the kitchen doorway with his coat already on and the kettle singing behind him.
You understand then that the watch was never telling you the time. It was keeping a place for you on the path back down. Ilse will be waiting at the hut with two cups of tea and the lamp lit. You turn the crown three times, slowly, and begin to walk.
