Compass, anchor and bird tattoo design
Black and grey · Flash
A detailed black and grey drawing of a compass set within twisted, leafy branches, with a coiled rope looping around it and a shaded anchor hanging from the lower left. A bird with spread wings flies at the upper right. The pencil-style shading gives the compass face, needle and anchor a three-dimensional look, set against an open white background.

Down the corridor, the monitors on Ward Nine kept up their small arguments, one beep at a time.

Above the nurses' station hung the brass compass that Mr Pryce had donated when he retired from the docks, its glass cracked straight across the N. He had told her once that the needle never lied, it only pointed at whatever mattered most to the metal. She told him it was nearly dawn, which was true enough, and he said the sea would be grey by now, and she didn't argue.
At the stairwell window she eased the sash up and opened the blanket. The bird didn't leave straight away. It sat on her wrist, looked at the car park lights and the flat dark beyond them, then rose in one clumsy lift and bent away over the roofs. She stood there until the air settled, then went back to the desk and wrote 'released' in the margin of the log, and nothing else.
