Polynesian-style tribal sleeve and chest

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A shirtless man's upper arm, shoulder and chest are covered by a large tattoo of bold black tribal patterns, including chevrons, bands and curved motifs. The solid black linework and dense fill create strong contrast against the skin, and the design wraps from the arm across the pectoral area. The background is dark and the image is cropped at the neck, so the composition focuses on the tattoo and upper body.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The chevrons were the reef, my grandmother said, and the bands were the swell that runs beneath it when the wind goes still. She had spent three nights drawing them on the back of a flour sack before she would let my uncle carry the paddles down to the lagoon. Nobody on Tavaki had seen a canoe with a pattern so dense, and the elders kept asking which family's sea it belonged to.

Uncle Mata took the carving of the prow for himself. He worked with a shark's tooth and a sharpened stone, rubbing soot mixed with coconut oil into every cut, and he never once looked up when the children came to watch. When the storm came in from the north the canoe was still half-finished, its curved ribs bare at the stern, and the boys dragged it above the tideline with ropes made from the fibres of old fishing nets.

On the morning the sky cleared, we found that rainwater had settled into the lines he had cut, turning the grain black, so the whole design stood out like writing on a slate. Mata stood over it with his hands on his hips for a long time. 'Now they can read it,' he said, and pushed the canoe into the water without another word.

We paddled out past the reef at dawn, following the chevrons across the water as though the sea had already learned them. When I looked back the shore was a thin grey line, and the bands on the prow were still catching the light, black against the shining lagoon, showing the way home to anyone who knew how to look.
