Black tribal band across shoulder and chest

Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large black tribal design wraps over the shoulder, upper arm and across the upper chest of a shirtless man. Bold solid bands, chevrons, triangles and hooked motifs form symmetrical patterns, with finer lines filling the spaces between them. The tattoo is in black ink only, and the torso and abdomen are sharply lit against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mere Tavita knew the tide was wrong before anyone else on Ulu-Vai did, because she was the one who sat on the reef wall at dawn and counted the lines of the sea. Dark water, then the bright band over coral, then the foam that folded inward in rows like the teeth of a comb. Her grandson Sione came down the path with a bundle of cut pandanus under one arm and found her talking to the water in the flat voice she used for scolding goats.

"Your father's canoe is still out past the second break," she said without turning. "The sea has drawn its lines too close together. Look." Sione looked and saw only waves, but he had learned that she never mistook one shape for another. He sat beside her and began to plait, the way the women did when they wanted their hands busy while the men were late. Each strip went over, under, over, and the pattern rose into bands that sharpened into triangles wherever the fibres met.

By noon the canoe came round the point, low in the water, its outrigger lashed with the very pandanus Sione had been splitting that morning. Hands went up along the shore. Mere did not smile. She took the mat from him, turned it over, and pointed to a hooked edge he had made without meaning to. "That is how the reef tells a boat to turn," she said. "You made a map and did not know it."

That evening Sione mixed soot with candlenut oil and worked the next band by lamplight, pressing each triangle down hard so the sea would have to read it.
