Black linework botanical tattoo of poppies, a seed pod and wildflowers wrapping around a shoulder and upper arm.

Poppies and wildflowers wrapping a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm with open poppy blooms, a poppy seed pod, and sprigs of fern-like foliage and leafy stems that curve around the arm. The design uses fine black outlines with light hatching and stippling for petal and leaf detail, and it is entirely black and grey. The composition follows the curve of the shoulder, with the largest flowers on the outer arm and smaller stems and buds tapering towards the top of the shoulder.

By the time you reach the back step, the flour sacks are already breathing dust into the cold air and Halima has the deck ovens roaring the way she likes them. She doesn't look up from the bench. She just nudges a grey tub across the steel with one knuckle. Two hundred grams for the lemon buns, she says, and keep the lid on, because poppy seed goes stale in the light and then the whole batch tastes of old cupboards.

You weigh it twice, because the scale drifts after midnight, and while you work the window over the sink turns from black to the colour of wet slate. Halima's mother taught her to judge a dried poppy head by shaking it by the stalk and counting the rattle, and you do the same now with the seed tin, tipping it under the strip light until the grains run like sand through a tiny hourglass. Outside, the bins clatter in the lane. Inside, the kettle starts its slow climb toward a shriek.

The first van pulls in at half five, headlights swinging across the sacks, and the rush starts the way it always does, all elbows and shouted orders. You glaze the buns with a brush dipped in warm syrup, then scatter the seed over each whorl in a dark rain of black on gold. Halima pauses beside you, watches your wrist for a long moment, and says nothing, which from her is praise.

When the last tray comes out, you carry it onto the back step. The car park goes grey, then pearl, then faintly pink along the roofs. Someone has left a dry seed head on the wall, bristling and brown, and you pick it up and hold it beside the buns. The same crown, the same small stubborn knot of seed, and the sun finally catching the grains.
