Daisy flowers and leaves on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows several daisy-like flowers with layered petals, along with buds and long, tapering leaves on sweeping stems. The linework is loose and sketchy, with soft grey shading inside the petals and leaves and darker accents at the flower centres. The design wraps diagonally from the top of the shoulder down the outer upper arm against a dark background.

The snow had buried the lane to the top of the gatepost by the third day, and Maud Halloran had run out of candles she trusted. She sat at the end of the long table in the Cross Keys with her sketchbook open and a stub of charcoal she had been sharpening with a knife since breakfast. Outside, the light went blue, then grey, then nothing at all.

Her father had grown daisies along the south wall of the nursery in Cumbria, great shaggy ones with petals like torn paper, and he had made her draw them every August until her hands ached. He never let her use colour. "Light is what the petals keep," he said, "shadow is what you owe them." She had not thought of that in years. Now she worked the petals outward from the centre, pressing hard at the dark heart and letting the edges dissolve, until the drawing began to look like something that had been out in the wind.

The landlord's boy came in stamping, shaking snow from his cap onto the flagstones. He asked what she was drawing, and she turned the book round. He squinted at it for a long time. "Them's not from round here," he said. "Where'd you see flowers like that in January?"

She looked at the page, at the stems sweeping down and off the edge, the leaves tapering like the blades of a late scythe. She had drawn every one of them from memory. Maud laughed, a little helplessly, and bent over the sketchbook again. "Nowhere," she said, and began the next bud.
