Potted flower on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A bold black-outlined design shows a stylised flower with a dotted, fan-shaped top rising from a patterned red, black and yellow pot. Green leaves, brown shading and red accents fill the body of the plant, with the pot's banded rim picked out in yellow. The left photo shows the full piece on the lower leg, and the right inset is a close-up of the colour and linework.

You are the last potter in Ammerlay still firing with red ochre, so when the king's steward comes down the hill road, he buys your banded pot with the gold rim. He wants a flower in it too: a fan-shaped bloom, dotted at the crown like frost on thistle. No flower in Ammerlay opens like that, you tell him. He says the king dreamed one, and the king does not forgive a dream left unfinished.

So you go before dawn to the ridge where the old wall falls away, and dig with a trowel in soil the same red as your glaze. You find a root with three dark leaves like knives and a bud no bigger than a thumbnail, and carry it home in your apron. You set it in the pot you almost sold, water it from the cistern that tastes of iron, and wait. For nine days nothing happens. On the tenth morning the bud opens into silver-edged petals, and the dots along its crown glitter like salt.
The steward returns at noon with his cart and his gloves. He lifts the pot, the petals shiver, and he frowns, because the king wanted the flower and not the vessel. You understand then that the pot is what holds it: the red bands, the zigzag, the gold line you spent a winter learning to fire true. Carry the flower out of the pot and it is only a weed on a ridge.
He pays you in the king's promise that the pot will stand in the palace forever. You accept, because the ridge is still red and you can dig there again. Before he leaves, you trace the gold rim with your thumb, lightly, the way you test a glaze that has set, and feel it hold.
