Rooster, skull and flower on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A rooster with a red comb and multicoloured tail feathers stands on top of a shaded skull, with stalks of wheat behind and an orange and teal flower in front. The design uses bold black outlines, solid colour fills and stippled shading on the skull. Two angled views of the same tattoo are shown side by side against plain skin.

Dear Ivy,

The rooster got onto the ghost train again this morning, which is how I know the fair has finally lost its mind. Dad had tied him to the ticket hut with a length of baler twine, and some little boy untied him for a penny's worth of sugar. The bird then walked straight up the ramp of the Big Wheel as if he held the lease. Nobody could catch him. Mrs Arkwright from the candyfloss stall swears he counted the carriages before he stepped on.

Mind, you'd have liked the afternoon. The generator van knocked over the bales we brought for the goat pen, and the wheat spilled into the mud, gold as anything. Dad took one look and said it was a sign, though he wouldn't say of what. Then the old skull from the shooting gallery rolled out from under the tarpaulin, the painted one with the cracked jaw, and the rooster hopped up onto it and crowed as if the sun had insulted him personally.

The flower lady has offered to paint the skull a proper orange and teal if we let her keep the rooster for the winter. I said I'd think about it, which means no, but I'm beginning to fancy she might win him round.

Write soon, and tell Aunt Bea the cockerel is not, under any circumstances, coming to the coast with us.

Love, Nell
