Purple gem and lotus on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The central subject is a large faceted gem shaded in violet and lilac with pale highlights, set within a black ornamental frame of lace-like scrollwork and small beaded details. A lotus with layered petals sits beneath the gem, and a row of dotted teardrops hangs from the lower edge. The composition is centred on the forearm, with fine black linework contrasting against the coloured gem and soft grey shading on the petals.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate road for four days, and Mrs Pritchard had run short of patience before she ran short of flour. She sat at the scrubbed table in the back room of the Fleece with a lace pillow on her knees, pins stuck along its edge like the teeth of a comb, and tried to make the bobbins behave. Her lodger, a jeweller from Leeds called Tobias Rawe, had left a violet stone on the mantel as surety for his reckoning, and he had not come down since Tuesday.

Ada, the girl who swept the taproom, asked whether the stone was real. Mrs Pritchard turned it under the lamp. Its facets caught the light like a frozen sea, lilac where the glow went in and a deep plum at the heart. "Real enough to pay for a fortnight of mutton," she said, "or real enough to pay for a funeral if he's gone out in this." They both looked at the window, where icicles hung from the eaves in neat rows, each drop rounded and bright as the lamp reached it.
Upstairs, the door of number four stood open on a cold grate and an empty bed. On the blanket lay a sketchbook, and Ada turned its pages by candlelight until she stopped. A violet gem sat at the centre of a black scrolled frame, a lotus of layered petals spread beneath it, and a line of dotted drops hung from the edge like the icicles outside. Beneath the drawing he had written in small square capitals: FOR THE WIDOW, TO BE PAID IN LACE.
The thaw came on the Sunday, and Tobias came back up the Hollin road with a sack of thread on his back and snow to his knees. Mrs Pritchard pinned the drawing above the table where the lamp could reach it. That evening she set the stone on the pillow and began to stitch the first petal, counting the drips from the eaves as they fell.
