Peonies on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of three full peony blooms, one smaller bud and several pointed leaves run down the forearm. The flowers are outlined with fine lines and shaded with dense stippled dots, giving the petals depth and texture. The design is in black and grey, with the blooms arranged in a vertical composition that follows the length of the arm against a plain light background.

Mind the third step, because it gives under a boot, and it always has. Harriet Pell put those peonies in the spring the harbour board man came up the headland with his cap in his hands. She dug the holes with a soup spoon, the spade being rusted to the shed wall, and swore at every root she hit. Sixty years on, they still heave up through the rock garden each June, heavy as wet wool, and the gulls still won't nest in them.

The lamp in that tower was failing that winter. The lens had clouded with salt, and every night Harriet climbed the hundred and twelve steps with a bucket of vinegar, a rag and a tin of newspaper, rubbing each prism until the beam ran clean across the water. She kept a tally in chalk on the wall beside the stairs, one stroke for every night the light stayed up. Some of those strokes are still there under the whitewash, if you know where to put your hand.
The night the Mary Ann came in blind, the fog sat on the bay like a dropped fleece and the lamp was barely a smudge. Harriet did not go up that night. She went out among the peonies with a torch wrapped in a red scarf and walked the rows, calling out the number of every stroke she had made, so the men on the boat could hear her over the surf. Four times, they say, she reached the end of the count and started again.
They found the Mary Ann at first light, pressed hard against the breakwater with her crew still aboard. When the fog lifted, Harriet was asleep in the peony bed with dew on her coat and a bloom folded in her lap, its petals dotted with soot from the wick. Her daughter says she never once cut them back. So when you climb past that loose third step, remember the lamp stayed lit because somebody was up counting.
