Purple pansies and a daisy on skin
Botanical · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three purple pansies stacked diagonally, with lighter lilac petals and yellow centres, alongside a white daisy with an orange centre at the lower left. The petals are outlined in dark ink and shaded with gentle gradients, with dark streaks in the lower pansy. Green wash sits behind the flowers, and the skin and a white cloth fill the rest of the frame.

The pit whistle went at six, and Ada was already at the back step with the kettle, watching the lane for Tom's lamp. Her mother had told her that heartsease grew best where the ground had been turned hard, and the ground behind number two cottage had been turned by three generations of shovels. So that spring she dug in pansies, three purple ones stacked up the wall like the rungs of a little ladder, and told nobody why she wanted them.

Nell from the top row kept daisies on the slag heap, white ones that came up through the black grit as if they had been sent for. When Ada mended Nell's boots for nothing, Nell dug up a root and gave it to her without a word, and Ada planted it at the foot of the wall where the pansies ended. Nell said a daisy would hold a body's luck if it was given freely, and Ada did not argue, because she had seen how Nell's mother had gone up the pit path every morning for years and never once come down it.
One November the lamp did not come round the corner at seven, nor at eight. Ada stood at the gate with her shawl over her head until a boy ran up from the shaft to say the cage had stuck at the third level and the men were being brought up by the old rope. Tom came up last, grey to the eyebrows, and stopped at the gate when he saw her face. Ada did not say anything. She only took his hand and walked him round to the back wall, where the purple flowers were already closing for the night beside the white one.
In spring she lifted the daisy and set it at the top of the wall, above the pansies, so the ladder finished in something bright.
