Butterflies and lilies on a hip

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows pink lilies and a pink orchid-like bloom, with a yellow flower, a purple bud and green leaves curving across the skin. A purple butterfly sits above the blooms and a blue butterfly sits lower on the right, both with dark outlines and soft shading on their wings. The bold, saturated colours stand out against the warm skin tones, and a navel piercing is visible at the top right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band at the Palais has given up on waltzes by ten, and Mr Ferris is dimming the lights to the colour of weak tea. You wait by the cloakroom with your coat over one arm while Dora tells the bandleader his trumpet is flat. Outside, the pier smells of vinegar and wet rope, and past the railings a fairground organ is trying to remember a tune.

Eddie finds you there, which you had not planned on. He is holding a jar that once held pickled onions, and inside it a purple butterfly is knocking itself against the glass. He caught it in the gardens behind the bandstand, where the lilies have gone wild after the rain. You tell him butterflies don't care for jars. He says that's why he brought it to you, since you are the only girl in Margate who never wanted anything she couldn't carry home.

You take the jar. The lid is loose, and when the wings open once you see them flash violet, then a bruised blue where the lamplight catches the scales. Dora calls your name from the stairs. Eddie says the pink lilies on the bank smell like a warm kitchen, and you should pick one for your hair before the lights go up.

You don't pick the lily. You unscrew the lid on the top step, and the blue one goes first, low over the railings toward the pier. The purple one stays on your wrist a long minute, as if it is weighing up the fairground, before it follows. Eddie laughs and says that is the most you have ever given away for nothing. You tell him he's wrong. You've given away a jar.
