Pursuit of text with molecule on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Black linework shows the words PURSUIT OF in a thin, clean sans-serif capital font, with a molecular diagram drawn to the right. The lines are fine and even, with no shading, and the tattoo sits on bare skin in the upper back near the shoulder blade. The background is a blurred treatment room with a blue couch and rolled towels, and the image is warm in tone.

Rain had been coming off the market canopies since six, and Desmond Okafor had stopped pretending the plums would sell at the price chalked on his board. He dragged the crates under the tarpaulin, shook the water from his cap, and watched a split plum roll into the gutter and stop against a drain. Down the row, the fishmonger was singing about the weather in a voice that carried better than the speakers.

A woman in a yellow mac stopped at his stall. She wanted walnuts, not plums, and while he weighed them she asked whether he had ever wondered why a good morning could leave a person steady for the rest of the day. Desmond said he sold walnuts, not theories. She laughed, counted out her coins twice, and told him the brain made a small chemical from something it found in food, and that this was why a bowl of cherries could calm a person down. He had heard it before, from a leaflet glued to the lid of an old crate, the one with the stencilled words PURSUIT OF half rubbed away by years of hands.
He had kept that lid. It hung on the wall behind the scales, and the diagram beside the words looked to him like a small house with a bent chimney. After she left he took it down, wiped the rain from the wood with his sleeve, and read the faded letters again. Then he rubbed out the chalked price on his board, wrote the plums at half what he had first asked, and left the crates open to the drizzle, because the woman had been right about the cherries and he wanted to see who else would come looking.
