Puzzle piece and banner reading Different Not Less
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A blue puzzle piece sits at the centre of the design, with a gold outlined shape inside it. A cream banner with orange edges and red folds crosses the piece and reads DIFFERENT NOT LESS in black serif capitals. Bold black outlines, flat colour fills and a plain skin background give the tattoo a crisp, traditional look.

By the last week of August the Bramleys were dropping faster than the pickers could bag them, and Mags had been moved to the packing shed table because her hands were the smallest. Under a tea towel at the far end sat a jigsaw box with its lid gone soft at the corners. Somebody had started it years ago. Most of the sky was done, a patchwork of blue, and one gap sat in the middle of a tin-roofed church.

Dennis, the foreman, had tried the spare piece from the bag. It was blue, and it was wrong. Its tabs stuck out in the wrong places, too many knobs on one side and none on the other, as if someone had guessed at the shape with a penknife. 'Reckon it's from another box,' he said, and dropped it on the table. Mags turned it over. Someone had drawn on the back in pencil: a little bell, and beside it, Don't force it.
She didn't force it. She spent the afternoon with the wasps at the open door, turning the piece in her fingers while the sun slid off the crates. The gold outline on its face had no clapper, as if the bell had been cut short, and the bell on the back was the same shape. Maybe the piece never belonged in that gap. Maybe the gap had been left open so something else could be built around it.
At six she carried the box home in her arms, the blue piece in her pocket, and set it on the windowsill where the light came in orange through the glass. Next spring, she thought, she would find out what the bell was for. For now the piece sat by itself, knobs and all, and nothing about it needed to be smaller.
