Umbrella and banner on the top of a foot
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A traditional-style tattoo on the top of a foot shows a red and white striped umbrella with a black handle hanging over a rainy grey background under a bank of dark clouds. A red banner across the centre reads BETTER GET USED TO IT, and the oval is framed by a twisted orange and black rope border. Bold black outlines, flat fills and simple grey shading give it a classic American style, in mixed colour with red, orange and grey.

Sit closer, you, the rain's only halfway through its sermon. There was a man called Ezra Dunning who kept the lamps on Gulling Street, and every landlady from here to the river told him his wife was a fool to marry a sailor. She said so herself, the night she left on the Thursday boat with her hair pinned up and a red umbrella under her arm, the one with the white panels her mother had stitched.

He stood under the awning of the Sailors' Rest and watched her go down the gangway, and the rain came across the harbour like someone emptying a coal sack. Nobody ever saw her again. People said she'd gone to Halifax, or Cork, or to the bottom of the bay, depending on who'd had the last pint.
Every night after that Ezra climbed his ladder, lit the lamp, and said the same words to the dark. Better get used to it, he'd mutter, it's not going to stop for you. Then one March the umbrella came back up the street on its own, folded tight, its black handle hooked over a lamppost like a question mark. Tied to the spokes was a strip of red ribbon with a single line inked on it, and under that, in her small square hand, the thing she always said when he came in soaked: rain is just the sky being honest.
Ezra never opened the umbrella. He hung it on the nail beside the lamp, where it still drips on the nights the clouds come low over the water.
