Puzzle piece tree on the upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A tree with a dark, shaded trunk, branches and roots fills the frame, with its canopy made of jigsaw puzzle pieces. The pieces are filled in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, while the trunk and roots use black and grey shading. The tattoo sits on bare skin on the upper back with no background around it.

She sorted them on the kitchen table for a fortnight. Reds went with reds, greens with greens, and the blues she kept apart because they were stubborn and wanted to be somewhere else. When she had finished, she found a single black piece at the bottom that fitted no colour at all, so she laid it on the windowsill and forgot about it.

The following spring the cherry at the back of her yard, which had been dying since the council cut its roots, put out one green shoot. Within two summers it had a trunk as dark as a wet fence post and branches that twisted like a sentence someone had rewritten many times. Where the leaves should have been there were puzzle pieces hung by their knobs and tabs, clicking softly when the wind came off the reservoir.

Her neighbour's boy climbed up one afternoon and came down with a green piece in his fist, insisting it had gone missing from his own set at Christmas. She told him to keep it. By August the canopy had grown a new green piece to replace it, and nobody on Harrowby Lane could say how.
