Rainbow watercolour tree on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A bare black tree with thin branches and a short trunk stands on a small patch of grass, with a canopy of soft, blotted colour in blue, purple, yellow, orange, red and green. The black linework is solid and crisp, while the canopy uses loose, bleeding colour with drips down the lower edge. The tattoo sits centrally on the calf against a plain skin tone and a wooden floor in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told twice by Mr Orme that watercolour did not forgive haste, and she had ignored him both times. Now the rain came sideways over the showground at Hollin Meadow, and the side panel of the caravan, the one she had promised to finish before the gates opened, was swimming in its own colours. She stood on an upturned crate and watched a violet run down into the green.

The tree on the panel was the only thing Orme had let her paint freely. He ran the Wheel of Seasons stall and wanted something above the coconut shy that didn't look bought. She had drawn the trunk first in black ink, thin and certain, the branches splitting like a hand opened too far, then let the colour loose on top: blue for a spring she had never seen in this county, yellow for the stubble fields, red where the windfall apples lay bruised under the ferris wheel.

By dusk the rain had stopped and the drips had set along the lower edge of the canopy, a row of coloured tears above a scrap of grass. Orme came round the back of the stall with a flask and looked at it for a long time. He said nothing about the haste or the bleeding. He only tapped the bare black branches with one knuckle and said the tree looked like it had been waiting all summer for something to happen to it.

Nell didn't tell him she had painted the colours in the order she had wanted to be forgiven for leaving home. She just handed him a brush. He dipped it in the green and added one small leaf at the very top, where all the colours met.
