A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The clockmaker's daughter in Haldane Reach had a habit of leaving the workshop doors open, so the wind from the salt flats came through and turned the brass fish that hung from the rafters. Her father said the fish were there to tell the weather. She said they were there to keep her awake, which was true enough, because the mill-engine under the town ran all night and she could not sleep without its knocking.

One winter a stranger came up the causeway carrying a flat box wrapped in oilcloth. He wanted the piece that had gone missing from the old engine, the one the town had carved out of a plain tan stone and fitted into the wall of the sluice house to hold the gate shut. Nobody remembered why it had been taken out. Nobody remembered who had taken it. The girl said she knew where it was, which was a lie, but she walked him up to the ridge where the wind was strongest and pointed at the sky, because it was the only thing she could think of that would make him stop asking.

He unwrapped the box. Inside lay a single gear, no bigger than a plum, the teeth worn smooth as sea glass. He fitted it against the sluice-house stone and the whole valley went quiet, the fish stopped turning, and then the engine under the town began to knock in a new rhythm, slower and kinder. The girl slept that night for the first time in years. In the morning the stranger was gone, and the gate stood open, and the river ran where it was meant to.
