Smoking blue bird in a leather jacket on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A blue, bird-like figure in a brown leather jacket sits in a large armchair, holding a red cigarette while smoke curls up past its head. The bold black outlines, flat colour fills and solid shading in brown, red and pale blue give it a traditional look. The design fills the frame on the upper arm, with a teal owl tattoo partly visible at the right edge.

Dear Maureen,

You'll not believe who has moved in across the landing since the lift was fixed. He's blue all over, feathers the colour of a swimming pool in February, and he wears a brown leather jacket with more zips than sense. He sits in the big armchair he dragged out onto the walkway on Tuesday, puts his feet up on the railing, and smokes a red cigarette down to the filter as if the council owes him money. Mr Okafor from twelve wants a letter sent to the manager, but I told him to wait for the wind to take the smoke elsewhere.
The trouble is, I've started leaving the kettle on for him. He doesn't do much talking, but on cold mornings he looks at my window like he's waiting for his tea. Last Thursday I put a mug on the rail and he raised a wing, tapped it twice on his sleeve, and went back to watching the car park. The owl in the flat below his hoots at him every evening, like they've got history.
On Friday I went down to the shop for a loaf, and when I came back up the armchair was empty. The jacket was folded over the arm and a single red stub sat in the ashtray tin. Half of me was relieved. The other half stood there with the bread under my arm, listening to the lift grind, wondering who I'd make the tea for now.
Write back soon and tell me what you'd do.
Love, Irene.
