Quote on the inner wrist beside a dogwood flower

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a grey stone surface with the palm facing up, showing a line of black lettering on the inner wrist. The script reads Through Dangers Untold and Hardships Unnumbered in a gothic-style face with fine, even strokes. A white dogwood flower with green leaves sits to the left, and the ink is a single grey-black tone against the pale skin.

Nell Ferris came back to the hall in Hallow Cross the year the apple trees failed, and she carried a dogwood sprig in her coat pocket because the old schoolmaster had always said a dogwood would keep a promise. Nobody remembered what the promise was. Everybody remembered the tree behind the old school, which had stood white every May until the council sold the ground.

The reunion was held on a Saturday in the church hall, under bunting that smelt of damp cupboards. Men who had once thrown chalk at each other now passed round a tin of shortbread and argued about who had hidden the register. Nell sat by the urn and said little. Then Tom Varley, who had been the cleverest and the most frightened of them, stood up and read the sayings the schoolmaster had painted along the wall years back. The last one was a line they had all forgotten, about dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, and he read it so slowly that the urn seemed to go quiet.

"We were meant to cross the moor together," he said. "Nobody did."

Nell took the sprig from her pocket and set it on the trestle between the cups. Its four petals were folded at the tips like cupped hands, and one bore a brown mark where a thumb had pressed it years ago in a book. Tom looked at it for a long while. Then he laughed once, and said the tree was still standing behind the bins in the car park, if anyone cared to see it, and by the time they went out into the dusk the whole room had found its coats.
