Script quote on an inner forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and forearm rest on grey stone beside a white dogwood flower. The forearm carries a two-line quote in dark, slightly blue-toned script lettering that runs across the wrist. The image has a soft, warm tone with the tattoo sharp against the skin and the flower in the lower left.

You find the lintel before you find the way in, half buried under dogwood petals that the wind has blown through the broken gatehouse. Someone cut words there long ago, and the letters have softened into the grey stone like the last of a winter frost. You brush the moss from the first line with your sleeve and read it aloud, because there is nobody in the courtyard to think you foolish.

The keep lost its roof to a storm that nobody in Kettering remembers. Inside, the stair turns on itself three times, and on the third turn your torch catches a mason's mark, a small five-petalled flower chiselled beside a broken spear. Old Hal, the carter who brought you as far as the ford, told you the dogwood only grew where the lords once kept their orchards, and that anyone who climbed the wall walk in spring would find the petals drifting down like a summons.
At the top, the parapet is open to the sky. Wedged in a crack beside the battlements is a folded letter in your sister's hand, the ink run by weather, asking you to come home before the harvest. You read it twice. The wind lifts a petal from the floor and carries it past your shoulder, out over the drop and the flooded moat, and you realise you have been holding your breath for an answer you already know.
You pick one white bloom from the sill, press it into the mason's mark on the stair, and leave it there for whoever comes after. Then you start down, the torch held low, counting the turns back to the gate.
