Rabbit skull design with tall ears

Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black ink drawing of a rabbit skull seen from the front, with two long ears curving upwards and outwards. The eye sockets, nasal ridge and teeth are rendered with dense hatching, stippling and fine contour lines that give the bone a textured, weathered look. The plain white background and centred composition suit a standalone tattoo design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift was broken again, so Nessa carried the shopping up eleven floors and the rabbit came up behind her, the way it always did on a Thursday. Nobody on Coldharbour Court had seen it properly. You heard its feet on the concrete steps, slow and deliberate, like someone counting. Mrs Achebe on six swore it had a bone face and ears that went up past the ceiling lights, and that you had to keep walking or it would sit down beside you and wait.

Nessa had heard this from her gran, who had heard it from a man who sold fish from the back of a van. Her gran said the rabbit was a keeper of bargains. It came for the ones who owed the stairwell something, a broken promise or a door left open, and it only took what was loose. Nessa didn't believe a word. She had a debt of her own, though, a tenner borrowed from her brother for trainers he never got back, and she had been turning it over all week like a coin in her pocket.

On the landing she stopped. The footsteps stopped too. Nessa turned round and there it was, lit by the orange bulb that buzzed over the bins, its long ears brushing the flaking ceiling, its hollow eyes fixed on her as if it had been waiting a very long time for her to be honest. She fished the tenner out and held it up. The skull tilted, considered her, then turned and went back down the stairs one slow step at a time.

Nessa knocked on her brother's door. When he opened it she pressed the note into his hand, and he laughed, said he'd forgotten the whole thing, and held the door open a little wider than she expected.
