Hamsa hand with elephant in black ink
Black and grey · Flash
A hamsa hand outline holds an elephant with its trunk raised, and the whole design is filled with dense ornamental patterns. Fine black linework, dots and hatching build up the textures, and lotus shapes appear at the fingertips and in the palm. The drawing is in black ink on a plain white background and is centred on the page.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The steward came to the dye-house before dawn, because the elephant Mohur had stopped eating and the whole palace of Ashwar was saying the drought was his fault. Tavi wiped the indigo from her fingers and followed him through the lotus courtyard, past the cisterns that had been dry since midsummer.

Mohur stood in the stable with his trunk curled tight against his chest, the way a man holds a wound. Tavi had painted the gate panels as a girl, and she knew what the elders believed: a hand held open invites the blessing, and a hand closed keeps the rain away. She asked for a brush and a pot of the black ink made from burnt rice husks, and she sat down in the straw.
She did not paint the elephant. She painted the hand around him, a tall arch of lines like a doorway, then filled the palm with rings of dots and knots of hatching until the eye had nowhere to rest. At each fingertip she drew a lotus, and in the centre she drew thread-fine lines for the rivers that had gone under the hills. All morning the steward brought her water and she did not drink it.
At dusk she finished the last petal. Mohur lifted his trunk slowly, the way a man raises his hand to claim something already promised, and curled it up toward the beam. Far beyond the hills, thunder rolled. The steward swore the animal had read the hand. Tavi only rinsed her brushes and went back to the gate, because the rain would take a day to reach the cisterns and she still had panels to finish.
