Raccoon in a suit with roses on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A raccoon wearing a dark jacket and red tie is the central motif, with its head shown in black and grey shading against a pale teal wash. Pink and orange roses with green leaves sit beneath it, outlined in bold black linework. The photo is taken from the side and cropped at the shoulder, with a black top and dark hair visible, and a grey shaded tattoo appears on the forearm at the lower right.

The fiddler had given up on the third reel, so Nell kept the time herself, clapping on the bench, while the raccoon crossed the boards in his dark jacket and red tie as though the hall had been built for him. Everyone in Harrow Mill knew he came up from the reed beds every Saturday. Nobody had ever asked how he paid for the suit.

He bowed to Nell's mother, who had not danced since the flood, and she rose anyway. They went round the hall twice, his paws light on her shoulders, a pink rose tucked behind his lapel the way the tailor in Fen Street wore one in his buttonhole. The old men counted his steps. They always came to nine, and the ninth fell on the drum beat, so that every couple on the floor stopped together and laughed without knowing why.
When Tom Abel finally asked him where a reed-bed creature got a jacket like that, the raccoon only smiled and said the river lent it against the summer, and the reeds kept the accounts. Tom didn't believe a word, so he followed him out at dawn. He saw a rose laid on each doorstep along the lane, orange, pink, pink again, and the raccoon walking back towards the water with his hands behind his back.
By the next Saturday the roses had gone to seed in the lane, and a red tie hung folded over the end of the bench, still warm from someone's hands. Nell's mother put it on the back of the door and did not say whose it was.
