Stag in ornate frame on thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A stag's head with antlers sits inside an ornate, scrolled gold frame on the outer thigh of a person wearing a light denim shirt and patterned underwear. The stag is shaded with soft, blended tones, and loose splashes of pink, blue, purple and orange extend beyond the frame. The photograph is taken from a low angle against a dark background, with the tattoo as the main focus.

At the ford of the Grey Water, where two valleys had quarrelled for three generations over who owned the bridge toll, a toll-keeper named Ilse Maddox kept a painting in her hut. It showed a stag in a gilt frame with scrolled corners, its eyes the colour of wet slate. Her grandmother had hung it there, and her grandmother had taken it from a lord's house during a flood, so nobody on either bank could say it was honestly hers.

Each spring the valley men came with their carts and their excuses. One year a tinker from the high side offered her a purse of silver to let his wagon pass untaxed. Ilse said no. He cursed the frame and spat on the step. That night the stag stepped out over the gilt, shaking paint from its shoulders, and pink and blue ran off it like rain down a window.
The stag walked to the water and stood on the stones. The river rose to its knees and no higher, and no man on either bank could find the fords again, though they had crossed them all their lives. Ilse sat on her step and watched. The tinker begged, then shouted, then went quiet, until he understood that every coin and bolt of cloth he carried had been counted and that the count was not in his favour.
At dusk the stag turned and walked back into the frame, and the splashes of colour stayed on the wood. Ilse kept the painting, and nobody tried to buy her again. A violet stain still shows on one gilt corner, and when children ask about it she tells them the stag was carrying something across for someone, and got it on the wall.
