Black and grey sketch-style tattoo of a horned ram head with a triangle eye and tentacles, on the outer thigh.

Ram head with tentacles and all-seeing eye on thigh

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo of a horned ram's head fills the upper leg, with a triangle eye above an inverted cross on its muzzle. Tentacles wrap around the lower part of the design, and flames and a small church shape sit at the top. The linework uses fine hatching and broken geometric shapes, shaded in black and grey on the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ram had been carved into the chapel lintel of Ostrey Vale since before the river changed course, and every child in the kingdom of Halvery knew its eye stayed open. You were the first to climb up and check. The stone triangle above its brow still held a lamp-bright hollow, and the cross cut into its muzzle had worn smooth as a spoon.

Smoke from the reeve's kiln drifted past the little church carved on the ridge. Below, grey tendrils from the drowned mere had crept up the lane in the night, curling round the mill wheel as if it were a wrist. Nobody in the vale would look at the water any more. You had counted nine doors marked with wet fingerprints.

Brother Anselm met you on the stair with a ledger under one arm. 'It sees everything,' he said, 'so it must see what we owe it.' He opened the book to a page of names in a neat hand, and yours sat at the top, struck through, with a date beside it. You understood then that the eye was not fixed on the ram at all. It was fixed on the ledger, and on you reading it.

You took the chalk from the altar step and drew a second eye beneath the first, one that looked down at the mere instead. By dawn the tendrils had drawn back into the reeds. Anselm never came down the stair again, and when you finally found the ledger tangled in the bell rope, your own name was written in it, in your own hand.
