Wolf and skull on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head sits above a human skull, with feathers and strands of beads hanging down the left side of the design. The wolf's eyes and fur are shaded in fine greyscale detail, and the skull has soft highlights and deep shadows in its eye sockets and teeth. The design fills the upper arm against a dark, out-of-focus background.

The wolf came down from the pines the night the miller's youngest went missing, and he did not hurry. Old Tamsin Reeve watched him from her doorway with a candle in one hand and a string of blue glass beads in the other, the way her mother had taught her, because a wolf that stops to look at you has not yet decided what you are.

The village said the wolf had carried the boy off, but Tamsin knew better. The boy had gone past the bog after a grey owl feather, the kind boys in Harrowdell tie to their slings for luck, and the wolf had found him stuck to his knees in the reeds and walked him home by the collar of his coat. Nobody believed a wolf could be that patient, so the story stayed the way the village wanted it, and the wolf stayed in the trees.
At first light Tamsin went up the old drove road with the beads in her apron pocket. She found him sitting beside the crooked oak where her grandfather's bones lay under a drift of leaves, the feathers from a dozen owls caught in the bramble around him. He looked at her with yellow eyes that had no fear in them and no hurry either. She set the beads down on a flat stone, one by one, and named each of the dead she remembered, as her mother had named them. When she had said the last name, the wolf took a single blue bead in his teeth, carried it to her boots and dropped it there.
She walked home with the miller's boy's cap in her hand and a feather tied to its brim with a thread of blue glass. At the gate she hung the cap on the post and fixed the feather above the latch, where it turned in the wind all that winter, and behind her, from the dark of the trees, the wolf gave a long low note like someone counting.
