Raven and red poppies on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a black raven in profile with detailed feather shading, perched among large red poppy flowers, green leaves and white scrolling ornament. The linework is bold and dark, with the raven's body mostly solid black and the flowers filled with flat red and deep red tones. The design wraps around the outer thigh and hip, and the photograph is taken at a slight angle against light bedding.

The lamp above the barrier has been buzzing for an hour, and the lorry ahead of you has been idling so long its driver has started folding the manifest into paper birds. You have worked this crossing eleven years, long enough to know which moths are dead and which are only resting. Tonight a raven lands on the roof of the booth, heavy and unhurried, the way it did the night your father came back over the hill with poppy seed sewn into the lining of his coat. You never asked him what he carried it for. You only learned to keep the drawer unlocked.

The grey Volvo rolls up next. The man behind the wheel hands his passport through the window with two fingers, and there is a poppy petal stuck to the back of his hand, red and papery and already browning at the edges. You know where poppies grow this late in the year: the verge past the bridge, where the council stopped mowing in August and nobody thought to tell the wildflowers. He says he has nothing to declare. The raven shifts its wings, unfolding and folding them, and says nothing either. You have come to respect that in a bird.

You check the photograph against the face, then the face against the photograph, and find they agree more than either of them would like. You stamp the page, the thud loud in the small hours, and slide the booklet back across the counter. "Enjoy the coast," you say, and he does not smile, which is fine. When the barrier lifts and the Volvo slips away, you open the drawer beneath the till, past the stamps and the spare biros, and set the petal down beside your father's old pass.

Outside, the raven lifts off the roof and heads for the verge, its shadow sliding over the tarmac like ink, black and precise, with a curl of white at its wingtip where the lamplight catches. The lorry driver flicks his headlights twice. The next car is already coming.
