Elephant and roses on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large sleeve-style tattoo covers the upper arm and reaches toward the shoulder. A greyscale shaded elephant head sits in the centre, with a bold red rose above and a yellow rose below, both outlined in black with dark leaves and shading. The photo is a close side view of the arm against a plain background, with a grey bra strap visible at the edge of the frame.

Nobody on Ward 9 had ever seen the elephant in the linen cupboard, though Priya swore it was there every night after two. She had found it her first week on nights, folded between a stack of tabard gowns and a box of blue gloves, a grey head the size of a dinner plate with the trunk curled down to the shelf as if it were listening. Someone had pinned a drawing to the inside of the door: roses, red above and yellow below, the leaves going dark at their edges.

Her mother had always said elephants were unlucky to bring into a house, and her mother had been wrong about most things, so Priya left it alone. She counted drips, turned Mr Okafor in bed four every two hours, and when the bell over the sluice went at half three she answered it with a bedpan in one hand and a flask of tea balanced on her hip.

By the end of February the drawing had gone soft from handling. Nobody admitted to pinning it up. The night sister, Dot Harrow, had retired in January with a cake shaped like a tin of Quality Street, and the new rota had left Priya alone on the desk with a porter called Terry who only talked about his allotment. She started to think the elephant was the only one on the floor who remembered who had worked there before.

On the last night of the month the cupboard door stood open and the drawing was gone. In its place, on the shelf, lay a single yellow rose, its petals browning at the rim. Priya stood a long while in the cold corridor, then filled a jam jar at the sink and set the rose at the nurses' station, where it stayed until the morning handover.
