Black and grey realism back tattoo of a large raven in flight with smaller birds, German text and a vertical brushstroke ladder motif.

Raven in flight across a back piece

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large raven with outstretched wings dominates the upper back, with smaller birds flying above it and a block of German text in the upper left. Below the text, a vertical column of loose, brushed black strokes runs down the spine. The shading is soft and realistic on the bird, while the background has a faint reddish wash that adds warmth to the otherwise grey-toned composition.

The ferry has been cancelled for the third day, so you sit in your mother's kitchen on Skerrow with her German grammar open on the table, the spine cracked where she left it. Someone has underlined a sentence in pencil. Freiheit, it says, is the ability to choose between possibilities without compulsion, and you read it twice because the word compulsion has gone soft with handling. Outside, the wind drives rain sideways across the bay, and a raven lands on the byre roof as if it has been waiting to be asked.

Your mother never left the island, which was her complaint and her pride. She taught German to the handful of children who wanted out, and most of them went. The ladder on the cliff path was hers too, put up the summer she gathered eggs from the stack with her sister. Its rungs are split now. Nobody has dared climb it since the winter gales took the top one, but the wood has held out better than the rest of us.

On the fourth morning the sky clears to a thin, bruised pink, and you walk out along the path with the book buttoned inside your coat. The ravens lift from the grass in a loose crowd, smaller birds scattering above them like sparks off a fire. At the foot of the ladder you stop. The first rung holds. You put your weight on the second, then the third, and the sea below goes quiet the way it does before it decides something.

At the top there is nothing but a wide view and a flat stone with someone's initials cut into it. You take out the pencil and write beneath her underlined line that the choosing is the easy part. Then you climb back down, rung by rung, and leave the ladder standing for whoever comes next.
