The fog came off the Sound in the third week of November and sat on Harrow Island for a month, so thick that the gulls walked the shore instead of flying. Old Mairi Gunn kept the north light, and her daughter Ishbel was across the water on Skerra, where the only doctor in the islands had gone to see to a fever. No boat would put out. So Mairi tied a length of red wool to the leg of the small brown bird that came to her sill each morning for crumbs, and she told it where to go, the way people spoke to animals in those days when there was nobody else to speak to.

The bird went. It rose above the grey where the light was white, found the chimney on Skerra by its smoke, and dropped the wool at Ishbel's feet. After that it flew the thread back and forth all through the dark weeks, carrying word of the fever, of the doctor's coughing, of the cold porridge and the warm one. On the ninth day a gull caught it over the reef and it came down on the step with one wing hanging, and Mairi sat with it in her apron until the feathers lay flat again.
When it could fly, she fed the wool through a fisherman's rope and told the bird to take the end. It went out into the white and did not come back for a long time, and she thought she had lost it, but the wool went taut in her hands and then the rope came after, hand over hand, until a boat's keel knocked on the rocks below the light. Ishbel climbed up the cliff path with the doctor behind her. The bird sat on the lamp rail, watching them come, and did not fly off until they were safely indoors.
