Realistic black and grey scorpion on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large scorpion is tattooed on the outer upper arm, with its curled tail arching over the top of the arm and its pincers and legs reaching down towards the elbow. The creature is rendered with soft grey shading, highlights along the segments and a dark outline, giving it a three-dimensional look. The photo is taken at an angle from the side, with a plain skin background and a white top and office chair visible around the tattoo.

I have it going, mostly, but the motor coughs every time I ask it for more than it wants to give, and I am learning which of its moods to humour.

The thing I meant to tell you is about the scorpion in the old feed store. Mr Ashby's boy came up on Tuesday with a crate he swore was empty, and when I lifted the lid there it was, black as a boot and curled in the corner like a question nobody wanted to answer. It did not sting me. I think it was too cold to bother. I put the crate back on the cart and walked it down to the beck, and I stood there a long while watching the water go by before I let it go.

I have been thinking since about how careful it held its tail, that arched hook raised over its back the way a man might hold a lantern he did not want anyone to see by. You always said the creatures in this country knew more about waiting than we ever would. Maybe that is all it was doing, waiting for the thaw so it could go on being itself.

Come at Easter if the roads allow. I will leave the feed store door unlatched, and you can tell me if I was right to let it go.

Your loving sister, Maud
