Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a forearm with a detailed lion head tattooed across it, showing the animal's mane, nose and one eye. The shading is smooth and graded in black and grey, giving the fur and face depth. The arm rests on a pale table in a softly lit room, with a second hand in the foreground.

The lion came down from the escarpment the week the rains failed, and by the time the water lorry reached the crossroads at Sabbel Wells, he had already taken two goats and the string off a boy's kite. The boy swore the lion had tied it on as a joke. Hanno Pell drove that road for nineteen years and did not believe in jokes from lions.

He carried a tin of pale ochre paint and a brush with three hairs left in it. Each dawn he stopped at the milestone past the wells, painted a fresh mane on the post where the old one had flaked away, and drove on. The villagers said the lion watched him from the rocks. Hanno said the lion was only curious about the paint, which smelled of linseed and of home.

On the ninth morning the lion walked out onto the tarmac itself, grey at the muzzle and slow in the joints, and sat down in the middle of the road as if it had been waiting for a lorry all its life. Hanno stopped. He climbed down with the tin. He did not try to paint the lion. He painted the milestone in front of it, one careful line along the cheek, the way his grandfather had shown him, and the lion leaned forward to look at the wet ochre.

It drank from the tank's dripping valve, then climbed back up into the rocks. The next morning there was a paw print in the dust at the base of the milestone, larger than the tin, and Hanno painted around it and left it alone.
