Realistic peacock head with feather eyes
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A peacock's head in profile dominates the design, with a detailed eye, crest and textured neck feathers. Peacock tail feathers with bright eye markings wrap behind it across the skin. The shading is smooth and blended, with strong greens, blues, purples and yellows, and the head sits at the centre of the frame with the feathers filling the surrounding space.

Brother Edric had counted the eyes three times and got three different answers, which was why he was on his knees in the herb beds at dawn with a lantern and a grievance. The peacock had come to the monastery the spring the old abbot died, a gift from a wool merchant who thought God would be pleased with ornament. Nobody had asked the bird what it wanted, and it had spent the years since making its opinions known from the top of the lychgate.

This morning the bird was gone, and so was the rope from the chapel bell, and the only trail was a scatter of feathers leading down to the millpond. Edric followed them with the patience of a man who had hunted hares before the cloister took him. The feathers grew larger and more beautiful as he went, each eye blue at the centre, green at the rim, then gold, as though someone had painted a sunrise onto each one with a very small brush.
He found the peacock standing in the reeds, neck arched, crest lifted like a question. The bell rope was knotted round one foot. Edric knelt in the wet mud, his habit soaking through, and held out his open hand. "You want to be heard," he said. "I know. So did I, once." The bird considered him with one dark eye, then lowered its head and let him work the knot loose.
By the time they reached the gate, the first bell for Prime was already sounding, and the abbot stood on the step with his arms folded. The peacock stopped, shook out its train across the frosted grass, and spread every eye it owned toward the sun. Edric said nothing. The abbot, for once, did not either.
