Rainforest frogs and flowers on a full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve showing a rainforest scene with several frogs, including a large red poison dart frog in the foreground, a spotted yellow and black frog and a red-eyed tree frog. Red flowers and green leaves frame the frogs, with shaded highlights and small water droplets rendered on the leaves and branches. Rich colour and smooth gradients dominate the composition, which wraps around the arm.

The red frog had a rule about rain. It sat on the broad leaf below the scarlet flowers and counted the drops that gathered at the tip of the leaf before they fell, and if the number came out even it would call up to the tree frogs on the branch and tell them the river would hold. Nobody had ever checked the count. The tree frogs, pale and wide-eyed, simply believed it, because the red frog was the only creature in the valley who never looked worried.

One wet afternoon the spotted frog from the mossy log came to ask why the number had come out odd three days running. It was a fair question. Its own belly had gone thin during the dry spell that came before, and the flies had moved to the far bank where the water still stood. The red frog did not answer straight away. It shifted its weight, looked at the bead of water trembling on its toe, and said the rain had been too honest this year to be counted properly.
The spotted frog laughed and said that was the sort of thing a frog says when it has lost its place. Then it hopped off through the ferns, and the red frog stayed where it was, watching the drip. Before dusk the drip slowed and stopped. The number came out even at last, and far down the valley the river began to rise, slow and brown, over the roots of the tallest tree.
The red frog counted the last drop as it fell and said nothing, because there was no one left on the branch to hear it.
