Realistic portrait of a man with flames
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a head-and-shoulders portrait of a man with swept-back dark hair, his eyes lowered and his collar open over a dark jacket. The face and clothing are rendered in soft greys and browns with smooth, blended shading and fine detail in the hair and skin. Bright orange and yellow flames curl behind and along the left side of the figure, adding warm colour against the muted tones of the portrait.

Dear Tom,

The lamp man came up the row this morning with his cap pushed back, saying the wind had taken the headgear at Number Four and we'd be on short shifts till Thursday. I didn't tell him Dad has been sitting with the picture again. You'll remember the one Mr Pryce painted off the photograph of the lodger, the fellow with the good hair who never paid his rent? It still hangs above the range, where the heat gets at the varnish.
Since the pit yard went quiet, Dad has taken to looking at it instead of the paper. He says the flames Mr Pryce gave him, orange licking up the left side like the kiln at the brickworks, are the only warmth left in the house since you went. I told him the flames were painted on and wouldn't keep a kettle boiling. He laughed, which I haven't heard in a month.
Last night a cinder spat out of the grate and rolled onto the hearthstone, and it struck me that the man in the painting never looks up. He keeps his eyes on whatever he's thinking about, the way the men come off shift and study their boots before they study anybody. Dad said that was the most honest thing about the picture.
Write soon, and tell me the sea is being kind. I'll put a candle in the window on Sunday, same as always.
Your sister, Nell
