Green-faced man in a fedora on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A realistic portrait of a man in a dark fedora, raising its brim with one hand, with a furrowed brow and a lip tinged with blood. The face and hand are shaded in green and teal with smooth blended transitions, set against a bright orange and yellow background, and a purple and pink scarf runs along the bottom edge. The portrait fills the frame, with the tattoo wrapping the calf.

He didn't sit. He stood by my table with one hand on the brim of his grey fedora, lifting it an inch as if to show he still had his manners. His skin had the colour of pond water in March. A thin line of blood ran from the corner of his mouth, bright as a cherry, and he didn't wipe it away.

"You stopped looking for me, Inspector," he said. "That was the mistake."

I told him the case was closed. He laughed, and the laugh came out wet. "Closed is a word for a drawer. Open the drawer. The envelope's still in there with my name on it, and so is yours."

I opened the drawer. He was gone before I found the envelope, and all that was left on the table was the damp print of a hand and the sharp smell of orange peel.
