Realistic portrait with crown of thorns on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic portrait of a bearded man with long hair and a crown of thorns, shown from the front with a single tear running down one cheek. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys in the skin and sharp highlights on the eyes and thorns. The face fills the centre of the frame, with the thorns and hair framing it above and around.

Brannoc had been scraping damp from the north wall of Saint Aldreth's for three weeks when the abbess told him to leave the face alone. Beneath the grey bloom of mould, a bearded man looked down from the vault, thorns crowning his brow, one drop of paint welling at the corner of his eye. The plaster there had cracked along a hairline, and every rain since midsummer had pushed a little more of the wall into the nave.

"Mend the rest," she said. "Not that." Brannoc was a mason's son from the salt marshes of Oresk, trained to mix lime and know when it would hold, not to paint faces. He spent his nights by a tallow stub with his tools laid out in a row on a cloth, listening to the wind come off the estuary. The painter was long dead. The guild ledgers named him only as Hesper the Lesser, which told Brannoc nothing except that the man had been too poor to be remembered.
On the twentieth night the tear caught the candlelight, and he understood it was not paint at all but a glaze laid over bare lime, so that it still held a shine. He worked it free with a feather brush, a fleck at a time, then filled the crack with crushed shell so the line of the cheek ran true again. When he finished, the face looked down at him with the same tired patience it had worn before he began.
The abbess came with the dawn bell and stood a long while under the vault. "You have not made him weep," she said. "Only kept him from being wiped away." Brannoc packed his trowel and said nothing, because the bell was ringing, the wall was dry, and that was all he had been paid to do.
